Certified Protection Professional
Purposes
The program of certification of security professionals has the following objectives:
- To raise the professional standing of the field and improve the practice of security management by giving special recognition to those security practitioners who, by meeting prescribed standards of performance, knowledge and conduct, have demonstrated a high level of competent and ethical practice.
- To identify sources of professional knowledge of the principles and practices of security and loss prevention, related disciplines, and of laws and regulations governing or affecting the practice of security.
- To encourage security professionals to carry out a continuing program of professional development.
Procedures
Application forms may be obtained from the:
Certification Department at the ASIS Headquarters

and filed with the appropriate fee. This must be done at least eight (8) weeks prior to the exam.

Professional Certified Investigator
Examination Description
The PCI designation is the certification for those whose primary responsibility is to conduct investigations. The examination consists of multiple-choice questions covering tasks, knowledge, and skills in three major areas:
Case Management
- Evaluating cases on a continuing basis for potential ethical conflicts
- Determining needs and developing strategies by reviewing options
- Implementing strategies by utilizing the investigative resources necessary to address case objectives
Evidence Collection
- Conducting surveillance by physical and electronic means in order to obtain relevant information
- Conducting interviews/interrogations of subjects to obtain relevant information
- Collecting and preserving objects and data for future assessment and analysis
- Conducting research by physical and electronic means and analyzing data to obtain relevant information
Case Presentation
- Preparing reports to substantiate investigative findings
- Preparing and presenting testimony by reviewing case files, meeting with counsel and presenting relevant facts

Physical Security Professional
Examination Description
The PSP designation is the certification for those whose primary responsibility is to conduct threat surveys, design integrated security systems that include equipment, procedures and people, or install, operate and maintain those systems. The test consists of multiple-choice questions covering tasks, knowledge, and skills in three specific areas:
Physical Security Assessment
- Identifying assets to determine their value and criticality
- Assessing the nature of the threats so that the scope of the problem can be determined
- Conducting a physical security survey in order to identify the vulnerabilities of the organization
- Performing a risk analysis so that appropriate countermeasures can be developed
Selection of Integrated Physical Security Measures
- Identifying measures/components to match the requirements of the appropriate solution/recommendation
- Performing cost analysis of the proposed integrated measures to ensure efficiency of implementation/operation
- Outlining/documenting recommendations with relevant reasons for presentation to facility so that appropriate choices can be made
Implementation of Physical Security Measures
- Outlining criteria for pre-bid meetings to ensure comprehensiveness and appropriateness of implementations
- Conducting final acceptance testing and implementing/providing procedures for ongoing monitoring and evaluation of the measures
